Ukrainian President Zelensky rejects calls for immediate ceasefire with Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly dismissed calls for an immediate ceasefire with Russia, arguing that it would only serve Moscow’s interests. He believes that halting military operations at this stage would allow Russian forces to regroup, fortify their positions, and prolong the war on their terms. Ukraine has repeatedly stated that any discussions about peace must be based on its sovereignty and territorial integrity, including the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from occupied regions. Zelensky’s government sees any ceasefire without these conditions as a dangerous concession that could weaken Ukraine’s negotiating position in the long run.

The Ukrainian leadership has also voiced concerns that a rushed ceasefire could lead to a prolonged conflict rather than a lasting peace. Officials fear that stopping the fighting prematurely, without clear security guarantees, could result in a situation similar to the 2014 Crimea annexation, where Russia took control and later escalated aggression. Instead of a temporary halt in hostilities, Ukraine seeks a comprehensive resolution that ensures its national security and prevents Russia from using a ceasefire to prepare for future offensives.

To sustain its resistance and reclaim occupied territories, Ukraine is urging its Western allies to maintain military and financial support. Zelensky has repeatedly emphasized that Ukraine’s ability to push back against Russian advances depends on continued international aid. His stance underscores the belief that a ceasefire without proper conditions would not bring real peace but rather delay the inevitable, allowing Russia to dictate the terms of future conflicts.
