The Cardiothoracic Team at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), in partnership with CardioStart International—a renowned global non-profit organization—has successfully concluded a five-day medical mission that focused on complex adult heart surgeries. From June 16 to June 20, 2025, the joint effort brought hope and healing to critically ill patients by delivering life-saving procedures that might otherwise have been inaccessible.

This landmark collaboration not only showcased the technical brilliance of Ghanaian and international surgeons but also emphasized the power of global partnerships in improving health outcomes in Africa. The surgeries, which required a high level of precision and expertise, were made possible through coordinated teamwork and shared commitment to saving lives. UGMC praised the dedication of both teams, saying “Ayekoo” (congratulations) in a public statement to honour their service and success.

Beyond immediate medical outcomes, the initiative reinforces UGMC’s long-term vision of becoming a premier centre for specialized healthcare, medical training, and research in West Africa. Collaborations like this one with CardioStart International are critical in building local capacity while ensuring patients receive world-class care right at home. It’s a milestone not just for the hospital, but for the future of Ghana’s healthcare system.
