UEW Withdraws 38 Students Over Poor Academic Performance – Here’s Why

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has taken a firm stance on academic performance by withdrawing 38 Level 100 students from the Department of Social Studies Education. This decision, which takes immediate effect, was made after these students failed to meet the minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) requirement of 1.0, as outlined in the university’s Revised Undergraduate Students Handbook (2019). Prior to their withdrawal, a thorough review of their academic records was conducted, and affected students were provided with academic counseling. With this action, they are now barred from attending Level 200 lectures or sitting for examinations.
This measure underscores UEW’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards and ensuring that all students meet the necessary level of competence for their studies. Faculty members have been directed to update their records to reflect these withdrawals, ensuring that only qualified students continue their academic journey. The decision also serves as a warning to other students to take their studies seriously, as the university is enforcing strict regulations to uphold academic integrity.
Similar policies have been implemented in other Ghanaian universities, including the University of Ghana, which recently announced that students with a CGPA below 1.00 would be withdrawn starting from the 2023/2024 academic year. These actions highlight the growing emphasis on academic excellence in higher education institutions across the country. By strictly enforcing these academic regulations, universities aim to improve educational outcomes and ensure that graduates are well-equipped for their future careers.
