Transgender and non-binary themes are eliminated from Meta's Messenger by Mark Zuckerberg.

Under Mark Zuckerberg's leadership, Meta eliminated the "trans" and "non-binary" themes from its Messenger app in January 2025. These themes, which were first released in 2021 and 2022, respectively, let users personalize their chat interfaces by using color schemes that symbolize non-binary and transgender pride flags.

The action is a component of Meta's larger policy reforms, which also include the termination of its DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) initiatives. The corporation ended the projects due to changes in the political and legal environment.

Furthermore, Meta updated its guidelines for content moderation, permitting remarks that refer to LGBTQ+ individuals as "mentally ill." Employees and advocacy organizations are worried that the change may lead to more dangerous content appearing on Meta's platforms.

These changes mark a dramatic change in Meta's stance on inclusion and content, as the company has prioritized freedom of expression even at the expense of permitting more offensive content.
