Tragedy at Gambaga College: Two Final-Year Students Fatally Shot, One Dead

On the night of Wednesday, March 12, 2025, a tragic incident occurred at Gambaga College of Education (GaCoE) in the North East Region of Ghana, where two final-year students on teaching practice were attacked by unknown gunmen. The attack happened around 11:30 pm, leaving one of the students fatally wounded. His body was discovered near the perimeter of the school, while the second victim survived with injuries. The motive behind this shocking act remains unclear, though there are growing concerns that it could be linked to the ongoing conflict in Bawku. In response, the college authorities suspended academic activities on Thursday, March 13, to allow for investigations and to mourn the deceased student.

Gambaga College of Education, established in 2012, has played a crucial role in training skilled teachers for Ghana’s education sector. Despite its contributions, the institution faces several challenges, including a lack of adequate infrastructure such as lecture halls, hostels, and staff accommodation. Earlier this year, the college celebrated its 4th graduation ceremony, where 250 students successfully completed their studies. However, issues such as security threats and resource shortages continue to hinder its progress. The recent attack has intensified calls for improved security measures on campus to protect students and staff.

Following the shooting, the local police launched an investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible. The Gambaga Chief’s Palace has also summoned the college’s Principal for discussions on the security situation. Authorities are under pressure to address the growing concerns of safety within the institution. This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for collaboration between security agencies, the government, and the local community to ensure that students can learn in a safe and peaceful environment.
