Omane Boamah, Murtala Mohammed and 6 others dead in Military Helicopter Crash

A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, when a military helicopter crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, reportedly resulting in the deaths of several high-profile government officials.

Among those feared dead are the Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, and the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. Also reported deceased are Muniru Mohammed, who was serving as Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; and Samuel Sarpong, the Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The ill-fated Z-9 military helicopter, operated by the Ghana Armed Forces, was en route to Obuasi when it suddenly disappeared from radar. The aircraft had three crew members on board: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
Emergency teams quickly responded to the crash scene. Graphic videos and images obtained by Citi News showed badly burned remains, although a complete list of the deceased or injured has not yet been officially released.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, who was participating in an anti-galamsey event nearby, is said to have rushed to the crash site upon receiving the heartbreaking news.

In a brief statement, the Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the helicopter lost contact shortly after departure and that recovery efforts are underway. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
This devastating incident follows a previous helicopter mishap in March 2024 near Bonsukrom in the Western Region. Unlike this recent crash, that earlier one ended without any loss of life.
