Government Approves Uniform and Fuel Allowances for Nurses and Midwives in Mid-Year Budget

The government has agreed to honor two major allowance demands—uniform and fuel—made by nurses and midwives. These allowances have now been officially captured in the upcoming mid-year budget review, which is expected to be presented to Parliament on July 17. This decision follows a crucial meeting between the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, the Ministry of Health, and the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), aimed at resolving parts of the group's longstanding concerns.
While this marks some progress, the GRNMA has expressed dissatisfaction, emphasizing that only a portion of their demands has been addressed. The association is particularly pushing for the inclusion of other key components such as the 8% non-basic salary allowance and rural incentives. Although the government has suggested these be considered in the 2026 national budget, the GRNMA insists they should be implemented within the current budget cycle or through the ongoing mid-year review process.
A follow-up meeting is scheduled between the GRNMA and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) on July 15, where the association is expected to press further for the remaining demands. The leadership of GRNMA has warned that failure to meet their expectations could lead to renewed agitation. As it stands, while some progress has been made, the broader issues surrounding the nurses’ and midwives’ conditions of service remain unresolved.
