NPP Rejects EC's Rerun Decision in Ablekuma North, Insists Akua Afriyie Won

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly opposed the Electoral Commission's decision to rerun parliamentary elections in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North Constituency. The party insists that its candidate, Akua Afriyie, emerged as the clear winner of the 2024 parliamentary polls and any attempt to rerun the election undermines the will of the people.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, July 8, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong declared that the party would not participate in the proposed rerun. He criticized the EC’s decision, describing it as unjust and contrary to the electoral facts on the ground.
According to Mr. Kodua, all necessary electoral procedures were followed during voting and counting, with both NPP polling agents and EC officials verifying and signing the results at the affected polling stations. The EC, however, cited irregularities in the collation process—specifically missing validations by some presiding officers on scanned results—as grounds for the rerun.
The NPP argues that this explanation does not warrant a rerun and sees the delay in declaring Akua Afriyie as MP-elect as a breach of the constituents' electoral mandate. As tensions rise over the disputed outcome, the Electoral Commission has yet to issue a formal response to the party’s firm rejection of its decision.
