Mahama Orders Review of Shipping Line Charges in Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama has instructed the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, and Attorney General, Dominic Ayine, to urgently examine fees imposed by shipping companies operating in Ghana. He emphasised that all such charges must be reviewed and presented to Parliament for ratification, as required by law.

The President's directive follows concerns raised by freight forwarders who claimed that some shipping lines were imposing administrative fees that lacked legal backing. These unapproved charges, they argued, were driving up the cost of doing business and hurting revenue collection at Ghana’s ports. President Mahama reiterated that no fees or levies can be lawfully imposed within the country without the approval of Parliament.
