Mahama Removes Dampare, Appoints COP Yohuno as New IGP

President John Dramani Mahama has officially removed Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from his role as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as his replacement. This decision was made in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution, following consultations with the Council of State. COP Yohunu, a highly experienced officer with forty years of service in the Ghana Police Service, is expected to lead critical reforms aimed at modernizing and enhancing the effectiveness of the force. His appointment marks a strategic move in reshaping the country’s security landscape. The removal of Dr. Dampare comes amid ongoing discussions about the need for reforms within Ghana’s security sector. During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 24, 2025, the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, clarified that the authority to appoint or remove the IGP rests solely with President Mahama. He explained that while his ministry could offer recommendations, the final decision lay in the hands of the President. This statement highlighted the President’s exclusive control over key security appointments and reinforced his commitment to restructuring the police leadership. The leadership change is seen as part of a broader strategy to realign Ghana’s security framework with the government’s objectives. COP Yohunu is expected to introduce policies that will enhance professionalism, accountability, and public trust in the police service. With his extensive experience, he is well-positioned to drive a transformation agenda that meets the nation’s evolving security needs. As Ghana navigates this transition, the new IGP's leadership will be crucial in shaping the future of law enforcement and ensuring the safety of citizens.
