Mahama Orders MMDCEs to Declare Assets by July 15
President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has mandated all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to declare their assets by July 15, 2025. Addressing participants at a training programme on June 18, Mahama emphasized that all current officeholders are legally obligated to comply. The directive comes as part of efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability in public office.

In a major hint at possible constitutional reforms, Mahama suggested that this could be the final group of MMDCEs to be appointed rather than elected. Citing feedback from the ongoing national constitutional review process, he stated that Ghanaians overwhelmingly support the idea of electing MMDCEs. He indicated that the National Review Committee is expected to present its final recommendations by August 2025, possibly paving the way for future MMDCE elections.

President Mahama also stressed the importance of prudent financial management. Highlighting the historic allocation of funds through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), he noted that 80% of the DACF has been directly channeled to the districts. He charged the MMDCEs to utilize the resources transparently and in ways that truly benefit the citizens, describing it as a key component of the government's social contract.
