Gov’t to Recruit 60,000 Education Staff in 2025 – Haruna Iddrisu

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has announced that 50,000 teachers and 10,000 non-teaching staff will be recruited in 2025, with full financial backing from the national budget. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, the Minister emphasized that the 2025 national budget has made adequate provisions for this large-scale recruitment aimed at strengthening the education sector.
“Mr. Speaker, as I have earlier assured this House, 50,000 teaching and 10,000 non-teaching personnel will be engaged. These allocations were captured in the 2025 budget,” the Minister stated.
His comments came in response to concerns raised by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over reports of alleged mistreatment of teachers during a recent protest at the Ghana Education Service (GES) headquarters.
Minister Iddrisu explained that he had met with teacher representative Bafour Eric, who confirmed that financial clearance for the previous batch of recruits was granted in May. However, since the newly engaged teachers started work in September instead of the expected August, their clearance expired at the end of December, requiring fresh approval. “They were scheduled to begin in August but delayed until September. As a result, the clearance lapsed by December 31. A new clearance is now necessary, and I am working to obtain it,” he noted.
He further reiterated the government’s resolve to address all outstanding posting challenges and ensure that the new hires are efficiently deployed to enhance educational delivery nationwide.
According to the Minister, this recruitment is part of a broader effort to tackle staffing gaps, improve educational support structures, and advance key reforms aimed at boosting the quality of education at all levels across the country.
