Government to Reinstate Free Fertilizer Distribution Program to Boost Cocoa Production – Trade Minister

The Ghanaian government is set to revive the Free Fertilizer Distribution Programme as part of its efforts to improve cocoa yields and support farmers across the country. This initiative, which was previously halted, aims to provide essential fertilizers to cocoa farmers at no cost, ensuring they have the necessary resources to enhance productivity. According to the Minister of Trade and Industry, the government recognizes the critical role cocoa farming plays in the nation’s economy and is committed to implementing policies that will sustain and boost production levels.

By reinstating the program, the government seeks to address challenges faced by cocoa farmers, particularly issues related to soil fertility and declining yields. The provision of free fertilizers will not only help improve the quality of cocoa beans but also reduce the financial burden on farmers who struggle with the rising costs of agricultural inputs. This move aligns with the broader vision of increasing Ghana’s cocoa output, strengthening its position in the global market, and improving the livelihoods of those in the cocoa value chain.

The Trade Minister emphasized that this initiative is part of a larger strategy to revamp the agricultural sector and promote sustainable farming practices. The government will work closely with relevant stakeholders, including the Ghana Cocoa Board, to ensure the efficient distribution of fertilizers and prevent any misuse. With this renewed commitment, authorities hope to enhance productivity, stabilize incomes for cocoa farmers, and further solidify Ghana’s reputation as a leading cocoa-producing nation.
