Ghana, China Sign $30M Deal to Build Aflao Market

Ghana has secured a $30 million grant from the Chinese government for the construction of a modern market in Aflao, a project that fulfills a 2024 campaign promise made by former President John Dramani Mahama. The agreement was officially signed on July 7, 2025, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra. Representing China was its Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, who endorsed the bilateral deal aimed at boosting local trade and infrastructure in the Volta Region.

This initiative echoes a similar development during the Mills-Mahama administration, where a Chinese grant funded the Kotokuraba Market in Cape Coast. The new Aflao market is expected to transform the economic landscape of the area, providing a modernized trading environment for vendors and stimulating cross-border commerce, especially with neighboring Togo.
