Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has urged Chinese officials to take swift and effective measures to curb the involvement of their citizens in illegal mining activities, widely known in Ghana as galamsey. During high-level talks in China with the Vice Mayor of Nanning, Guo Wei, Ablakwa emphasized the environmental damage being caused by some Chinese nationals operating illegally in Ghana. He revealed that a significant number of these offenders originate from Nanning, citing official data that links the city to the ongoing crisis.

Both sides committed to promoting lawful, sustainable, and transparent investments—marking a shift toward a more accountable and environmentally responsible phase in Ghana-China relations.
