Ghana and India have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate in key sectors such as vaccine production, defense, cyber security, and agriculture. During his two-day State Visit to Ghana, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended President John Mahama for his leadership in revitalizing Ghana’s economy and for his role in promoting democracy across Africa.

On July 2, Prime Minister Modi was honored with Ghana’s highest state award. “This marks the first stop of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s five-nation African tour, which will conclude at the BRICS Summit in Brazil. Both nations have held meaningful talks to enhance collaboration in several economic areas, including agriculture, energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, human resource development, and healthcare,” President Mahama stated. He highlighted that, “Following our fruitful discussions, multiple memoranda of understanding have been signed to strengthen our shared commitment to long-term cooperation. These include an MoU to establish a permanent joint commission between Ghana and India. Moving forward, we will rely on diplomatic channels such as foreign office consultations and the permanent joint commission to realize the objectives of our partnership.”

Prime Minister Modi, speaking through an interpreter, pledged India’s full backing for President Mahama’s economic reform initiatives. “We have agreed to double the number of ITEC and ICCR scholarships available to Ghanaian students. Plans are underway to set up a skills development center to provide vocational training for the youth. In agriculture, India is ready to support the Feed Ghana initiative,” he said.

He also announced, “India aims to establish Jan Aushadhi centers in Ghana to offer citizens affordable and dependable healthcare services. We also discussed collaboration on vaccine production. In defense and security, we are committed to advancing under the principle of ‘security through solidarity."

Prime Minister Modi concluded by affirming that India will enhance its cooperation with Ghana in training armed forces, strengthening maritime security, supplying defense equipment, and improving cyber security capabilities.
