GES Engages Protesting Teachers, Promises Swift Action on Salary Arrears

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially addressed concerns raised by newly posted teachers who staged a protest at its Accra headquarters on June 23, 2025. These teachers, who began duty in September 2024, are demanding the payment of 10 months of unpaid salaries and the issuance of Staff IDs. In a statement released on June 24, GES acknowledged the teachers' grievances and reaffirmed its commitment to resolving the matter, attributing the delay in payment to an expired financial clearance inherited from the previous administration.
To fast-track the resolution, GES stated that budgetary provisions for the affected teachers have already been made in the 2025 National Budget. The Service is working closely with the Ministry of Finance to ensure the release of funds. Additionally, a joint technical committee—comprising GES officials and representatives from the affected teacher groups—has been set up and is reportedly making good progress. However, GES emphasized that ongoing changes in leadership within the teacher groups are hampering progress and urged for unified representation to facilitate effective communication and quicker outcomes.
GES also used the opportunity to highlight broader reforms aimed at improving teacher welfare and career development. According to the statement, over 50,000 staff members have received their due promotions, and long-pending cases, such as promotions to Deputy Director, are actively being addressed. The agency called for patience and cooperation as it works toward equitable and lasting solutions, reiterating its dedication to transparency, teacher welfare, and the integrity of the profession.
