Freemasonry is Rooted in Christian Teachings, Not Occultism – Afenyo-Markin Clarifies

The Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has sought to dispel misconceptions surrounding Freemasonry, emphasizing that it is not an occult organization. He pointed out that many people misinterpret the principles of Freemasonry due to a lack of understanding, often associating it with secrecy and mystical practices. According to him, Freemasonry is a fraternity that promotes moral development, self-discipline, and charity, rather than engaging in hidden or sinister rituals. His remarks come in response to persistent public skepticism about the organization’s true nature.

Afenyo-Markin further explained that Freemasonry is deeply influenced by Christian values and teachings, reinforcing virtues such as honesty, integrity, and brotherly love. He highlighted that many of its members are devout Christians who uphold the ethical standards of their faith while also contributing positively to society. He argued that the fraternity’s guiding principles align with biblical teachings, fostering spiritual and moral growth rather than any form of occultism. By stressing its commitment to service and uprightness, he sought to correct the perception that Freemasonry operates in opposition to Christianity.

In addressing these concerns, Afenyo-Markin called for a more informed discussion about Freemasonry, urging the public to research its doctrines before forming opinions. He expressed concerns that misinformation often fuels unnecessary fear and prejudice against the fraternity. Rather than viewing it as a secretive or dangerous group, he encouraged people to recognize its contributions to charitable causes and community development. His statement aims to shift the narrative, presenting Freemasonry as a respectable institution guided by principles of faith, morality, and service to humanity.
