British Board Questions Sharaf Mahama’s Boxing Tournament

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has received an official communication from the British Boxing Board of Control concerning the recently held “Battle of the Beasts” boxing event, organized by Sharaf Mahama. According to GBA Communications Director Mohammed Amin Lamptey, the email called for swift intervention from Ghana’s Minister for Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority to closely monitor and regulate boxing promotions in the country.
The "Battle of the Beasts" event, which drew widespread attention, featured top-tier matchups such as Jacob "The Beast" Dickson vs. Andrew Tabit for the WBO Africa Bridgerweight title and Daniel Selassie Gorsh vs. Theo Allotey in the African Bantamweight division. The event reached a new high with the attendance of global boxing icons Anthony Joshua and Amir Khan, further amplifying the event’s prestige and appeal. Joshua commended the organizers, stating it was “a step in the right direction” and expressed hope for similar events in the future.
Despite the event’s success, the concerns raised by the British Board point to the need for stricter oversight of boxing promotions in Ghana. The GBA, Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the National Sports Authority may need to work collaboratively to ensure that all events align with international standards and maintain the integrity of the sport. This proactive approach will help safeguard Ghana’s boxing reputation on the global stage.
