Breaking: Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi Dies Suddenly

Ernest Yaw Kumi, the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, has been reported dead in what comes as a major shock to Ghana’s political landscape. His passing, confirmed on Monday, July 7, 2025, has thrown the Eastern Region constituency into mourning. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) legislator was relatively new to Parliament, having been elected in the 2024 general elections after a highly contested seat that saw post-election legal tussles. Though the cause of death is yet to be officially disclosed, tributes have already begun pouring in from colleagues and constituents, many of whom described him as passionate, bold, and dedicated to public service.

Kumi's time in Parliament, though brief, was eventful. His initial victory was challenged in court, leading to delays in his swearing-in and even a contempt charge that was later quashed by the Supreme Court. Despite these early hurdles, he went on to represent Akwatia with energy and commitment, making efforts to champion local development. His sudden demise leaves a vacuum not just in Akwatia, but in the NPP caucus as well. As Ghanaians await more information on the circumstances surrounding his death, discussions are also beginning about a possible by-election and who will step up to fill the void left by his untimely departure.
