Attorney-General Orders EOCO to Investigate NDC’s Yamin and Abanga Over Galamsey Allegations

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has directed the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate two leading members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) — Joseph Yamin, the National Organizer, and Yakubu Abanga, the Third Vice Chairman. This directive follows allegations linking the two party officials to illegal mining, also known as galamsey. In a letter dated July 15, Dr. Ayine instructed EOCO to interrogate the accused and extend the investigation to any other individuals connected to the unauthorized mining operations. The move is also expected to factor in findings from Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s earlier report on illegal mining, which has been a critical reference point in Ghana’s fight against environmental degradation.

This development comes amid President Mahama’s renewed push to tackle illegal mining under his administration's "Reset Agenda," which emphasizes restoring integrity in governance and protecting natural resources. The Attorney-General also urged EOCO to work closely with the Chief Executive of the Minerals Commission to ensure a comprehensive investigation. While EOCO is expected to treat the matter with urgency, Joseph Yamin has already denied any involvement in illegal mining. As public interest in the case grows, many Ghanaians are watching closely to see whether this probe leads to formal charges or if the accused will be cleared of wrongdoing.
